Welcome to the ZIN MAFIA. Green and Red was founded by sculpter turned wine grower, Jay Heminway in 1977. In typical artist fashion, Jay kept the truth of the name “Green & Red” a mystery to all.. but his daughter and current owner, Tobin’s most likely guess is for the unmistakable red chert rocks with green serpentine veins running through them that dazzle the 3 vineyards on their property.
Jay forsaw potential for an expression of magic from that piece of land and felt inspired to synchronize with nature and break ground with our favorite red and green plant, vitis vinifera. Tucked into the mystical hills of Chiles Canyon, lies Green and Red’s three vineyards, Chiles Mill, Catacula and Tip Top, their winery and Tobin and her husband Ray’s home.
From vineyard to bottle, the repetition of red and green is uncanny. Although the charm of all characters involved and the imagery of such a place are enough to leave us asking for more, the true shining stars of Green and Red are their spectacular Zinfandels.
Green and Red does what most other Napa producers do not, and specializes in Zin. They are famous for their non jammy, age worthy, earthy, food friendly style Zinfandel that we don’t see so often these days. Additionally, they are the go to Zin supplier for a handful of other reputable California wineries— aka the Zin Mafia.
These wines are arguably the most impeccable forms of California’s OG varietal and we strongly encourage everyone to experience their mystique!
Tobin, Ray and their incredible team are constantly on the move to do just that, and on the rare occasion that they’re not.. you’ll probably catch Tobin flashing peace signs at cars, crossing the street outside Chez Panisse in Berkeley, where Green and Red has been the house wine for countless years, as Ray parks his red Tesla, license plate: prmitvo.
