GRAPEVINE WINE BROKERS

Phillipe Jouan

Domaine Philippe Jouan is a small and exceptional winery located in Morey-St.-Denis, a village in Burgundy’s Côte d’Or region. Positioned between prestigious neighbors Gevrey and Chambolle, Morey-St.-Denis often stands in their shadows. However, the wines from this domain offer a compelling blend of diverse attributes, showcasing the solidity of Gevrey’s wines and the fragrant purity epitomized in Chambolle.

The domaine was established in 1962 by Henri Jouan, who initially sold fruit to renowned wineries like Drouhin. Today, his son, Philippe, continues the legacy, crafting wines that exude old-vine sap, dense structures, and deep, penetrating flavors. Philippe’s wines are characterized by their expressive and sophisticated fruit, rooted in the earth and evoking an authentic, humble beauty.

The estate spans only three hectares and follows traditional winemaking practices, fully destemming before basket pressing and utilizing 100 year old wooden presses, first used by Philippe’s great-grandfather. The wines are known for their attractive marker of individuation, occasionally presenting a bit of volatility that adds to their distinctiveness.

Among their standout wines are the villages wines, particularly the Morey, Gevrey-Chambertin “Aux Echézeaux,” and Chambolle. The premier cru Clos Sorbé and the single grand cru from Clos St. Denis further elevate the domaine’s reputation.
