Domaine Jacques Saumaize is a family-run winery, renowned for creating exceptional wines that reflect the terroirs of the Maconnais region in Southern Burgundy. The winery was established by Jacques in the early 1980s and was later joined by Nathalie in 1987 and Anthony in 2012, who further solidified the spirit of the estate. Today, the estate thrives on 12 hectares nestled between the rocks of Vergisson and Solutré, producing a variety of cuvées such as Macon Vergisson, Saint Veran, and Pouilly Fuisse, each exemplifying the unique characteristics of their terroir.
Deeply committed to preserving the environment, the estate started the organic labeling process in 2020 after over two decades of careful stewardship of their soils. The practice involves meticulously hand-harvesting grapes, pneumatic pressing, parcel vinification in barrels, and aging for 10-12 months. All vineyard operations are done with respect for the plant and soil, often manually, including pruning, lifting and shearing, and leaf stripping. They plow all their soils, minimally use tractors, and regularly add natural compost.
The estate has embraced biodynamic practices for years, with Anthony recently introducing the use of natural herbal teas, like energizing horsetail, silica, and horn dung, to invigorate the vineyards seasonally. Moreover, they have shunned insecticides, favoring reasoned treatments with sulfur, and allowing wines to age on fine lees, enhancing their complexity, richness, and finesse.
