This remarkable group of wineries has shaped the wine industry with their innovative, soulful wines that capture the essence of Napa Valley’s terroirs and the evolution of California wine over the past three decades.
The Vision Behind PlumpJack
Gavin Newsom, a fourth-generation San Francisco native, founded PlumpJack with the vision of making wine approachable and enjoyable for everyone. Inspired by his personal challenges with learning disabilities and barriers in the wine world, he partnered with his father’s friend, Gordon Getty, to open the original PlumpJack wine shop in 1992. Named after Sir John Falstaff, a Shakespearean character symbolizing loyalty and joy, PlumpJack has grown into a mission-driven winery.
From the Valley Floor to Howell Mountain
In 1995, PlumpJack Winery was established in Oakville, committed to crafting high-quality wines that reflect their land. The winery’s whimsical yet world-class ethos continues to shine in their wines. In 1997, they made waves by introducing screw caps to 50% of their reserve Cabernet Sauvignon—a bold move challenging traditional wine packaging norms.
The team expanded their vision in 2005 with the creation of Cade Estate Winery on Howell Mountain. As the first LEED Gold Certified organic winery in Napa Valley, Cade set a new standard for environmental responsibility. Winemaker Danielle Cyrot meticulously crafts mountain-grown Cabernet Sauvignon and valley-floor Sauvignon Blanc, honoring the land with exceptional care.
The Birth of Odette and Adaptation
In 2011, the team added Odette Estate Winery in Stags Leap District, designed with sustainability in mind, including a green roof and recycled materials. Odette’s inaugural vintage achieved a perfect 100-point score, solidifying its reputation for excellence. The team’s passion also led to the creation of Adaptation, a label showcasing fruit from top Napa Valley vineyards, producing Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Verdot that capture the region’s diversity.
