Eric Morgat, hailing from a family deeply rooted in the terroirs of Anjou for over two centuries, established his own domaine in 1995 in the Savennières appellation. Starting from scratch, he purchased and meticulously restored five parcels of land that were either wild or abandoned. Despite the challenges, he recognized their immense potential. Today, Eric cultivates 6 hectares of land exclusively planted with Chenin Blanc grapes, certified organic since 2007 and biodynamic since the 2012 vintage.
In his vineyards, Eric implements unique practices such as sowing specific flower seedlings among the rows. These flowers blossom and contribute to the vitality and balance of the soil. Located in the lower foothills of the Massif Armoricain, the region’s seemingly gentle nature belies a harsh reality. The soils, composed of schist or volcanic rock, lack moisture-holding clay or limestone. Despite the ocean’s influence, rainfall is limited to 400-600 mm annually.
Harvesting is done meticulously by hand, with grapes transported in small crates to the press. Eric’s attention to detail shines through as the fruit undergoes rigorous sorting, ensuring optimum ripeness without crossing into over-ripeness. Yields range from 20 to 30 hl/ha, reflecting Eric’s commitment to quality over quantity.
