Matteo Correggia
If you don’t already know the wines of Matteo Correggia, they’re one of the great discoveries of Piedmont. From the rolling, sandy hills of Roero — just across the Tanaro River from Barolo — this small family estate has quietly become the benchmark for what the region can achieve.
Matteo Correggia was among the first to recognize Roero’s potential back in the 1980s, when most of the world still saw it as secondary to the Langhe.
He believed that the region’s ancient marine sands and fossil-rich soils could yield wines of incredible perfume, energy, and finesse — and he was right. Tragically, Matteo passed away young in 2001, but his wife Ornella and their children have carried his vision forward with extraordinary care and authenticity.
The style today is all about clarity and balance: the Arneis is racy and mineral, full of orchard fruit and citrus zest; the dry Brachetto — a rarity in Piedmont — bursts with wild strawberry, rose petal, and spice yet finishes crisp and savory; and the Nebbiolo Ròche d’Ampsèj stands shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the most elegant wines of Barolo and Barbaresco, marrying floral aromatics with refined tannins and an unmistakable sense of place.
This is real Piedmont — soulful, family-driven, and expressive of its terroir in every glass. If you’re looking for wines that combine character, craftsmanship, and story, Matteo Correggia should be at the top of your list.
