GRAPEVINE WINE BROKERS

Château Montfin

"Seeking a Corbières apart from the standard, we recently found in Château Montfin the value of a Corbières with the concentration and depth of a much higher pedigree wine."

For many years, Jerome Esteve had been searching for parcels of old-vine Carignan, when in 2002, he finally found Château Montfin. This domaine is an entirely old vines estate with vines dating back to 1930. The total production is very small for this relatively tiny (by Corbières standards) estate of 20 hectares, with the average yields being just 25-35 Hl/Ha.

Since 2009, the domaine has farmed all parcels of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault (60+ year old vines) following organic protocols. And now the entire domaine is certified organic. Additionally, biodynamic practices such as spraying an infusion of nettle and comfrey on the vines, placing green manure on the vines in order to add organic material and humidity, and planting a variety of trees adapted to the Mediterranean climate around the vines to encourage an equilibrium in the ecosystem. Three Pyrènees donkeys, Laouset and offspring, Bahia and Aglae, are most helpful during winter. They pre-prune the vines, eat the grass and even add a little natural fertilizer to the terroir.
