Domaine René-Noël Legrand, Clotilde Legrand’s winery, holds a rich history connected to the Saumur-Champigny appellation, with the Legrand family being among its earliest producers since the 17th century. In 2014, Clotilde became the family’s first female winegrower, carrying on the legacy. The vineyard spans 16 hectares and is primarily planted with Cabernet Franc, used to produce red wines from the Saumur-Champigny AOC. Some plots are dedicated to Chenin, producing Saumur Blanc, a dry white wine. The vines grow on gentle slopes enclosed by picturesque freestone walls, providing protection and optimal brightness for grape maturation.
With vineyards planted in limestone and chalk soils, the winery focuses on manual harvesting to achieve grapes of optimum ripeness. Vinification is plot-by-plot, emphasizing quality and the unique characteristics of each vintage. Maturation takes place in vats or 500-liter oak barrels. The winery’s dedication to perfection has earned them recognition from the press, with cuvée Les Rogelins being cited as a reference of the appellation.
The Domaine contains an underground network of limestone cellars dug by hand. These ancient cellars, with high humidity and a constant temperature, provide ideal conditions for wine storage. Additionally, the winery emphasizes sustainable practices, although not certified organic, with very low levels of sulfur dioxide added in their winemaking process.
